Must Visit: Churches and Monasteries


An integral, historic piece of Pogoni, this time a religious one, are the churches and monasteries of the area. They are of great interest from an architectural point of view.  Monasteries and churches are usually built with gray stone (typical of the area) , with small arched entrances, their zenanas on the west, rich of carved temples- results of exquisite art mastery.
These examples of ecclesiastical architecture will be met by the visitor in every village of Pogoni, proof that religion has always been an integral part of everyday life for the inhabitants.
Specifically we advise you to visit:
• The Monastery of Vellas in Kalpaki ,which was founded in the 11t
vella 500h century. It is dedicated to the Assumption and during the 13th century (and for 400 years) was an important spiritual center but unfortunately was abandoned in 1817. It served as a seminary from 1911 to 1989. It is an architectural example Trikliti basilica with beautiful wood carved temples and exquisite frescoes, built in 1745. • The Monastery of St. George in Riachovo built in 1998. The monastery has one of the most beautiful carved temples, located in a beautiful lush landscape.

abelThe Abbey Abel in Vissani. Probably built in 1770 by a man named Abel and painted in 1779. It is a single-cell basilica sample dedicated to Virgin Mary. The gilded temples and frescoes are a pole of attraction for every visitor.vissani anikol

• The Church of St. Nicholas in Vissani, built in 1791. Architectural sample of Royal Trikliti, inside house with domes.

• The Church of St. Nicholas in Pogoniani. Built in 1873 and features 15 domes.

• The Monastery Makryalexi in Kato Lavdani. Built in 1585 by a man called Makralexi or Alexis. Great sample of four columned church with an octagonal dome. The monastery has beautiful murals and is located in a beautiful landscape.CSC_0292bb

• The Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary, in Delvinaki. It was built in 1620 and was expanded in 1812. The frescoes of 1646 inside the temple were only recently discovered while the wooden temple is a sample of 1850 art mastery.

• The Monastery of John the Baptist in Kato Merope. This is a sample of one-room church and was built in 1614. It has a preserved part of its remarkable wall paintings and carved wooden temple. Do not forget to visit it as it is located in a superb forest of old oaks.
